Summer Family Photos in the Moosehead Lake Region, Maine
As a Maine family photographer, I love when families and couples reach out to document their time in the Moosehead Lake Region. As a local, I know the area’s charming pockets of trails (including sections of the Appalachian Trail), and its small-town feel, which make it perfect for a getaway.
Whether you’re visiting for a family trip for the first time, or return year after year, sessions like Gera & Ari’s are some of my favorite stories to photograph. One July afternoon by the water, months before their baby arrived, we chatted all about life as it was then, and what it was soon becoming.

Rather than a list of poses or contrived candids, I’m more interested in documenting the reality of this very special time for families. From our first call, I ask questions about who couples and families are, what they like to do, and what brings them to Maine. The families I work with are much more interested in sharing their day-to-day excitements so they can have genuine images that reflect the time they’re in.
How I Help Couples Feel Comfortable During a Family Photo Session in Maine
I know it can be helpful to understand how a photographer creates images that tell more about a family than prompts and poses can. So, I’d love to share a little about how I approach a family session:
I learn about families and ask questions prior to our time together to get to know them and what they enjoy. What would they do if I wasn’t there?
During our time together, I let curiosity lead the way. We’ll chat, but I’ll back off when the moment calls for it giving space for couples and families to move together the way they naturally do.
I have no set list of poses or prompts, instead I keep observation, intention, and flexibility at the forefront.
Gera & Ari were excited about having photos that showed how they felt about each other at this moment in time, remembering their relationship before they had children, and being able to share that with their child someday. So, these sentiments guided every choice I made during our time together.

Rather than handing out a standard list of spots, I take the time to learn what families enjoy doing together and create a custom selection of locations tailored to them if they don’t already have a place in mind. Many of the families and couples I work with want photos that feel natural and connected to their experience in Maine.
