A Winter Wedding at The Barn at Hatch Point in Maine

Ashley and Garrick reached out to me to chat about documenting their winter wedding at The Barn at Hatch Point in Midcoast Maine right before Christmas. They were excited about getting as many photos outside as possible along with candid images of their family to relive the feeling of the day as it happened.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS AS A DOCUMENTARY STYLE PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE YOUR WEDDING DAY

After our initial meeting, I sent Ashley and Garrick a few questions to get to know them and their guests a little better. These are aimed to help me understand and keep my eye out for different details and moments that may happen throughout a wedding day.

Through these questions, I learned just how important both of their grandmothers were to them. This helped me anticipate moments throughout the day that would be especially meaningful.

One such moment was when the grandmothers met each other and shook hands for the first time — it wasn’t on a list, or a prepared moment, but I knew to always keep an eye on both grandmothers to anticipate moments like this and be ready. (I may or may not have been tearing up a bit behind the camera.)

A WARM AND COZY WEDDING AT THE BARN AT HATCH POINT

Another part of their day they were excited about was warm, cozy details that added a special touch to their celebration. Their wedding was about a week before Christmas, and the black exterior of The Barn at Hatch Point provided the perfect classy and elegant backdrop for a winter wedding.

The owners, Kelly and Darren, even cut down a tree to place inside the venue, where guests could hang their Polaroids as ornaments. It was sweet, homey, and such a fun way to ring in the beginning of their marriage!

WHEN THINGS DON’T ALWAYS GO AS EXPECTED ON A WEDDING DAY

I will say, no matter how planned and coordinated a day is, things don’t always go as expected. That detour though? It often reveals the incredible support surrounding a couple, and it’s one of the most beautiful things to witness.

There was an outfit mishap — a forgotten piece of clothing for an important guest. And at first, it felt like a worst-case scenario. But then, everyone rallied together to figure it out. It all ended up feeling beautifully orchestrated — friends got on the phone, and people immediately jumped into problem-solving mode.

Part of my job is to bring comfort and reassurance in those moments. Outfit mishaps? Unexpected weather? I’ll still document the beauty of your day, the beauty of your people, and what brings you all together. Because that is what it’s really about.

A PARTY TO END THE NIGHT – SPEAKEASY AND DANCE FLOOR AT THE BARN AT HATCH POINT

Once the lights go out and music starts, The Barn turns into a paaaarty. With a speakeasy downstairs and a dance floor upstairs, there are enough spaces to enjoy the rest of the evening, however you’d like. Looking for a quieter space to chat and enjoy a drink? Speakeasy is for you. Looking to dance the night away? The dance floor is yours.

WHAT IF YOU COULD ENJOY YOUR WEDDING DAY AND HAVE IMAGES THAT BRING YOU BACK TO HOW IT FELT TO BE THERE?

Ashley and Garrick threw a warm and cozy party for 100 of their closest friends and family to celebrate their wedding day in Midcoast Maine at The Barn at Hatch Point. If you’re looking for a venue that has it all — on-site accommodations, outdoor space in the woods and on the water, and a beautiful, modern indoor area — The Barn at Hatch Point might be the perfect fit.

After delivering their gallery, Ashley and Garrick told me how fun it was to see photos that revealed moments they didn’t get to witness on the day itself. That’s the beauty of a documentary style — it brings to life not only the connection between you and your partner, but also the moments shared between your people.

SWEET WORDS FROM ASHLEY & GARRICK —

“Sienna captured the most important parts of our day without us evening knowing and it has been so fun to relive the wedding and all the emotions through her photography. Not only is she a great photographer but she is a wonderful person and we loved just having her around! She was such a light and consistently positive throughout the entire process and it made what can be a stressful day, so much more relaxing.”
