Small Backyard Wedding in Norway, Maine

Sarah and Chris invited 50 of their closest loved ones to celebrate their marriage at a family property in Western Maine on a beautiful mid-June day. The property is one where Chris and his family had spent summers since he was young. Having been together for over a decade, Sarah had also spent a great deal of time at the home, enjoying family dinners and experiencing the seasons of Maine.

PLANNING A BACKYARD WEDDING IN MAINE

Having already eloped in the winter at home in New York City, they planned a small celebration with their family and friends during the summer in Maine. They were excited to hang out and soak up time with their people and wanted the day to feel relaxed and full of love.

During our first call, we talked a bit about them, their people, what they were most excited about for their day, and their plans! It was all centered on staying present in their day — with each other and their guests. They were looking for genuine documentation of the experience. When I asked what photos they were excited about seeing they said:

“Ones (photos) of us just laughing and enjoying time with our family + friends, plus some of the intimate moments between just us.”

A WEDDING DAY AT A FAMILY PROPERTY IN WESTERN MAINE

From my first visit to the farm, just a couple of months before their day, I could see and feel how much beauty, history, and love had been experienced there.

Getting to walk the grounds and meet with my couple is the cherry on top of the whole experience! It is by no means necessary to create beautiful photographs, but an in-person meet up and location scout are offerings I include as part of the experience.

What does a property scout do?

Getting to scout a property is an opportunity to potentially meet a couple’s family before the wedding, especially if their celebration is taking place at a home. It’s also a chance to notice small details about the property and ask questions that help me learn even more about the history of people and place.

Sarah and Chris’s day was truly a family affair. From Chris’s mom helping with all of the logistics, flowers, and barn set up, to Sarah’s brother stringing lights around the trees — it was so lovely to see everyone coming together to bring the celebration to life.

35MM FILM DURING A SMALL WEDDING DAY

I now offer 35mm film with my 6-8 hour and 2 day collections! I find that especially on smaller wedding days, there is so much room to document on both digital and film. The details and intimate portraits translate so sweetly on film — there’s nothing quite like it.
