The Quarry - Monson, Maine

I had the pleasure of visiting The Quarry in Monson, Maine this past May. Marilou “Lulu” Ranta and those behind The Quarry welcomed my camera and I with open arms.

Lulu received the James Beard Award for hospitality this past summer (2023), and I was honored to photograph her just before she headed to Chicago for the celebration.

Lulu was wearing a particular hat that said the word, “Sisu” and mentioned her husband gave it to her. Sisu means courage, determination, and perseverance.

It just so happens, as she was explaining the word’s meaning, the light symbolized the conversation.

Lulu is light. I felt it right away as I was welcomed into The Quarry and got to know a little bit of the heart creating the delicious food.

It was also quite special to document the beauty happening just down the road from me. Thank you for having me, Lulu!
